Float has reinvented business finance for Canadian companies.

Finance teams use Float to enable, control, and track corporate cards, expenses, and accounts in one intuitive platform. Expanding beyond their initial user base of startups and tech companies, Float is now used by thousands of Canadian businesses, including Neo Financial and Knix.

THE VISION
Float wanted to augment their web app offerings with a mobile app that made it easy for users to manage cards and log receipts anywhere, anytime.

WHY LAZER?
We’re fast and adept at both React Native apps and fintech platforms — we could quickly translate all the necessary features from Float’s web platform into a seamless mobile experience for businesses and employees on the go.

Approach

Translating Float's web app into frictionless mobile designs

We analyzed Float’s existing web app and designed an intuitive mobile experience for both spending and approvals.

We made sure spenders could easily manage cards and request new ones in the app. When they review transactions, they can instantly see which ones have been approved, declined, or need receipts added (with push notifications to help them stay on top of receipt compliance). As spenders request reimbursements and card limit increases, admin can seamlessly review and approve in the app.

Approach

Fluidly integrating credit card details

We wanted to display credit card information in the app, but the API we were using only supported web apps at the time.

We had to find a clever workaround where the mobile app would open a web view, which was branded to look like part of the app.

The user was already authenticated so they would land directly on a web page that showed their card information. We made that page mobile-friendly and ensured that the process was smooth and secure.

Testimonial
Lazer was a fantastic partner to Float as we built our mobile app. They approached our project with professionalism and urgency, and worked extremely well with our internal engineers to ensure we developed a solution that furthered our mission of simplifying spend for companies and teams.

Approach

Supporting mobile receipt upload and transaction capturing

The mobile app allows receipt upload to happen on the go, ensuring that every transaction could be logged immediately and nothing would get missed.

The Float backend uses an OCR API that fetches all the text from a receipt picture.

Float's submission policies allow customers to define what information is required to ensure a transaction is compliant. Users get push notifications that prompt them to update important accounting information to ensure the month-end closing experience is seamless for the finance team.

Approach

Accelerating the build with a parallel deployment pipeline

We made sure our app deployment was fast and non-disruptive.

Pipelines can get bloated with information from people running tests and waiting for approvals, increasing the time it takes to push code. We had separate threads for testing and building, which meant that the code we pushed would become an app within a few minutes.

Working closely with the Float team, we helped them take this mobile app from concept all the way to a successful launch.

It’s now a key part of Float’s business finance platform, saving businesses time and money throughout expense management.

Float has since announced their $70M Series B round, led by Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, and it’s been amazing to see them grow to 4,000 customers and counting. They’ve already made such an impact on Canadian businesses and we’re honoured to be a part of it!
